Monday, April 21 - LA Times Book Review Editor David Ulin

When he is not writing reviews or editing the Los Angeles Times Book Review, David Ulin is the author of three books: Another City: Writing from Los Angeles, a groundbreaking anthology of contemporary LA writers; Writing Los Angeles: A Literary Anthology, which surveyed the historical record of literary LA, from Helen Hunt Jackson to Evelyn Waugh to Mike Davis; and, most recently, The Myth of Solid Ground: Earthquakes, Predictions and the Fault Line Between Reason and Faith, a personal exploration of the 1994 Northridge quake and a kind of geo-spiritual primer on living in earthquake country. Ulin is a tireless booster of LA writers and a real advocate for reading, book culture and literacy in his position as editor of one of the nation’s outstanding weekly book reviews, indeed one of the few book reviews still published by a major daily newspapers. Today I talk with Ulin about Los Angeles writing, the Book Review, next weekend's Festival of Books , the LA Times Book Prizes and, most importantly, what he’s reading and recommends.
