Wednesday, December 9 - Vicki Forman

Wednesday at noon my encore guest is Vicki Forman. Last year Forman appeared on this show, reading with other contributors from an anthology of writing by parents who are also creative writers, and who are raising children with special needs. In Forman’s Love You to Pieces essay and in her essays published elsewhere, she told small parts of her own remarkable story --- many stories, really --- of giving birth to extremely premature twins, and raising her son Evan, the multiply-disabled child who survived. Vicki Forman wrote through it all, the birth and the struggle over the babies’ futures, and being a parent to Evan, and she went on to assemble that work in a remarkable collection which won the prestigious Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference Bakeless Prize. So it is with real admiration and delight that her fans and friends celebrate the arrival of her nonfiction book This Lovely Life: A Memoir of Premature Motherhood. Novelist Meg Wolitzer writes about This Lovely Life: “The idea of love; of choice; of ambivalence; of imperfection; of purpose: these are all here, in a narrative that is propulsive, startling and vivid, like motherhood itself.” Go to http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/07/24/RVB618HP8B.DTL for a really smart review. Thanks for listening. Holiday fund drive, originally scheduled for today, is next week. Stay tuned.
