Tonight at 8 o’clock on Bibliocracy: Poet Dorianne Laux, on The Book of Men.
A soldier, a lover, a detective, a late-night tv commercial huckster, Mick Jagger and even Superman. These characters are among the men considered in poems collected in the latest volume from my guest this week, Dorianne Laux. Her newest book, titled The Book of Men, is another careful and empathetic study of moments observed, and of being aware of those moments. Autobiography rises from within these poems even as they portray the lives of their subjects, as if Dorianne Laux has somehow also become the men, and women and children of these portraits, all at once, in an exchange of the power to live for the power to tell. About her Tony Hoagland says “she is one of the poets who is keeping alive the brave art of looking.” Dorianne Laux is widely published, and is the author of four previous collections of poetry. She teaches at North Carolina State University, and lives in Raleigh.
